Terminally ill dog adopted from Maine animal shelter
A terminally ill dog has found his home after being adopted from a Maine animal shelter.
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland shared Rusty's story on its Facebook page.
Shelter officials said 1-year-old Rusty was born with a liver shunt, which means his liver can't detoxify his blood.
Rusty was brought to Maine from Georgia. In Georgia, he had surgery to try to restore normal blood flow to his liver, but the surgery was unsuccessful.
"Everything possible was done, but his liver is extremely small and functioning poorly," the Facebook post said.
The shelter said Rusty's prognosis depends on how quickly his symptoms progress.
"It could be weeks or months, we simply don’t know. Our goal is to make the most of the time Rusty has left," the post said.
On Monday, the shelter shared the good news that Rusty was adopted and can begin his Maine bucket list adventures.
The shelter said his new family promises to keep them posted with Rusty's bucket list and lots of photos.
