The New Hampshire Council of Churches, which represents 400 congregations, along with New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management offer active shooter training to help any house of worship prepare for the worst. The council said this includes any synagogues or mosques as well.
The Pelham church where a shooting took place Saturday recently underwent active-shooter training, something more houses of worship are signing up for.
“Using that training well they were able to tackle and subdue the attacker,” said Rev. Jason Wells, executive director of the Council of Churches.
This faith community teaches to spot trouble and intervene, it does not promote arming the congregations.
“One thing we’ve always been clear on through the council is that adding more guns to a situation makes it less safe,” Wells said.
The Council of Churches said the training also helps congregations handle other emergencies that are more likely to happen such as a fire or medical issue.
