Some families in Dover awoke early Monday morning to the sound of gunfire, but police said it doesn't appear that anyone was injured.
Multiple shots were reported about 1:20 a.m. on Hampshire Circle. Resident Rebecca Trowbridge said she couldn't get back to sleep after hearing the shots.
"I'm very nervous," she said. "I have children that play outside all day -- very nervous."
Resident Jessica Corbin said she also woke up to the sound of gunfire.
"I was actually sleeping, and I heard three gunshots and I heard a bunch of screams," Corbin said.
Corbin said when she looked out her window at about 1:30 a.m., two cars she didn't recognize were parked at opposite ends of the street.
"Then, I saw a bunch of kids bolt across the road, and they were screaming with some not so nice words, and they ran into the woods," she said.
"There was a confrontation between two different groups of people," Lt. Brant Dolleman said. "During that confrontation, multiple gunshots were fired. At this point in time, we think there were at least three shots."
Police said they have no reports of any injuries or property damage, but the investigation is continuing.
"I saw the two K-9s come out and look around," Corbin said. "They were also using metal detectors. They were going up and down the sidewalk. They went in between the buildings over here."
Police said they are trying to determine what led to the shooting.
"We've identified a lot of the people involved in those two groups," Dolleman said. "We haven't made any arrests yet, and clearly, these two groups of people were familiar with each other."
Police said they don't anticipate any more violence, but whenever shots are fired in a residential neighborhood, it remains a cause for concern.
