Republicans around New Hampshire gathered Tuesday night to watch President Donald Trump formally announce his reelection bid.
Grassroots supporters and volunteers met at the Ryan’s Place diner in Epping to watch the televised rally in Orlando, one of 13 watch parties around the state.
“They want to get together, and we want to celebrate, and we want to get people excited and be empowered,” said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Nina McLaughlin.
Nearly 800 watch parties were organized nationally to show support for the president.
“Our economy is better than ever,” McLaughlin said. “Our unemployment rate is better than ever. Our (gross domestic product) is high. Americans are saving money because of his tax cuts.”
“Our border is getting more secure as we speak,” said state Rep. Fred Doucette, R-Salem, who served as Trump’s state campaign chair in 2016. “The crisis there is being addressed. He brought Mexico to the table … He has done what he set out to do and he has done what we have hired him to do.”
A representative for the New Hampshire Democratic Party thought otherwise.
“He came to New Hampshire four years ago and he told voters that he was going to look out for them, but Republicans like Donald Trump and Chris Sununu only look out for lobbyists and the top 1 percent,” NHDP spokeswoman Holly Shulman said.
State Democrats are gearing up for a statewide day of action Saturday.
“We have 10 events all across the state, asking people to sign up, to get involved and volunteer, because no matter who the Democrat is, we know how much is at stake with Trump’s reelection, and we want to make sure he doesn't occupy the White House for another four years,” Shulman said.
The president will face a Republican primary challenge from former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld.
