Democratic presidential candidate hiked across Pennsylvania while running for Senate

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Sestak is at the back of the pack of the polls in the first-in-the-nation primary race, but he's hoping that a walk across the Granite State will put him on the map.The retired admiral is making his way from the Vermont border to the Seacoast on foot."My daughter actually loved the book 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' and we used to read it to her when she was very young, and in it, Scout's father, Atticus, said to her: 'You can't know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them,'" Sestak said. "And so I walked across Pennsylvania to show people I want to learn and walk in your shoes when I was running for Senate. So, I thought when I would come here, I'd do the same thing."Sestak is on a 105-mile journey from one side of New Hampshire to another. On Monday, he was in the Monadnock Region, highlighting campaign issues on his way to the Seacoast."I started with mental health," he said. "We'll be doing an autism event. We'll be doing campaign finance reform. I'm going to a VFW tonight to talk about veterans."Sestak's trek across Pennsylvania was 422 miles. The retired three-star admiral said he has always liked to hike."I backpacked into China the very first year they opened it up for independent travel by Americans," he said. "I had hundreds of people in Wuhan and Chunking. They'd never seen a Caucasian before. They just opened it up as I'd go walking through. I'd wish someday I'd have that many following me here on the campaign."It might be a gimmick, but some voters saw it as a way to connect."It certainly is," said Chris Rietmann, director of Bitcoin Embassy NH. "He's going to meet real New Hampshire folk."Candidates who decide to walk across the state have provided memorable moments in New Hampshire, but the tactic hasn't yielded any victories in the primary. Sestak said his walk is about more than just winning an election."I mean, I have learned a lot," he said. "Just meeting everyone, much like as an admiral I'd get off the bridge wing, come down with the enlisted and sit on the mess decks eating with them after the last planes came home from Iraq or Afghanistan, just to be with them."
