Escaped Starke County inmate Bradley Smith has been captured just west of Indianapolis about eight hours after police initially alerted the public to his getaway.

Police apprehended him in Hendricks County some time Tuesday afternoon,

.

The Starke County Sheriff's Department SWAT unit first alerted the public to the 32-year-old Smith's escape from custody near Starke Hospital in Knox Tuesday morning.

Starke County SWAT updated his clothing description shortly before noon EDT with two new photos that appear to show him wearing a red hat, a white shirt with an image on the front, gray sweatpants and black shoes.

Online jail records list his height at 5 feet, 8 inches and weight at 184 pounds. He has red hair and blue eyes.

Authorities asked that anyone who saw Smith call police immediately. They urged citizens not to try to apprehend him.

He was booked at the Starke County Jail on June 30 and was being held on a $100,000 bond for battery or battery by bodily waste against a public safety official, resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct.

Police did not immediately say whether Smith would face additional charges for the escape.

The original Facebook entry about Smith's escape was posted around 8:45 a.m. EDT, but it was not immediately clear exactly when he escaped custody.
