GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan is home to more active hate groups, a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center concludes.

On Wednesday, the group released its yearlong analysis of hate and extremism in a 73-page report, titled “Rage Against Change.”

The report on 2018 also includes an interactive map showing all active hate groups by state. The number of hate groups in Michigan hit 31 —  up from 29 the year prior and 28 in 2016.

Of the 31 active hate groups listed in Michigan, two are based in West Michigan: Gallows Tree Wotansvolk Alliance and the Nation of Islam.

Nation of Islam is labeled on the map as a black nationalist group with chapters in Grand Rapids and Detroit. It’s led by Louis Farakhan, who believes all white people are inherently evil.

The Southern Poverty Law Center previously labeled Gallows Tree Wotansvolk Alliance as a neo-Nazi group, but this year it was reclassified as a “general hate” group.

Gallows Tree Wotansvolk Alliance is led by Mike Peterson, an ex-con who lives in Allendale. When 24 Hour News 8 spoke with him two years ago, he said the group had ten members in West Michigan. He claimed they weren’t white supremacists and denied any Nazi involvement, even though their website talks about Aryan values and features pictures of a man with a swastika tattoo.

Peterson also said the pose he struck on his group’s website, with his right arm raised, is not a salute to Hitler, but a workout move.
