A CELEBRATION of Chinese New Year took place today (Sunday, February 17) in an extravaganza that brought together various forms of Chinese arts and culture.

Frankie Tsang, Founder Chairman of Worcestershire Chinese Association , who brought the celebration to the Guildhall, said in his opening speech: “Welcome to this celebration of Chinese New Year 2019, the year of the pig. Pigs have a beautiful personality and express good fortune in life. The Worcestershire Chinese Association was formed by a group of Worcester people over 18 years ago. We are a non-profit voluntary community organisation serving the local Chinese community.

We help the Chinese people live and settle in Worcestershire for a better life. We work closely with the local government to promote Chinese culture in Worcester. On behalf of the Chinese Association, I would like to say thank you to the Chinese students, and international students who are volunteering today, and to the Worcester City Council for helping us today, and to the University of Worcester.”

The day started with a traditional Chinese Lion Dance outside the guildhall. The performers wore elaborate lion costumes and were accompanied by dramatic traditional Chinese percussion music. Children handed the lions red envelopes with donations, the red envelopes are believed to be lucky in Chinese tradition. The dancers handed the children fortune cookies in return.

Inside the guildhall a variety of performances took place including a demonstration of martial arts from adults and children.

Chinese children performed some poetry and music and traditional Chinese music was enjoyed. The day ended with a raffle draw.
