CRICKET turned red in Worcester this weekend in support of an England legend whose wife died from cancer.

Following on from the success of the 'Red Day' at Lord's - which was to commemorate Ruth Strauss, wife of former England Captain Andrew, who died last year aged 46, clubs across the county got together to raise money for the Ruth Strauss foundation.

To take part, each club was asked to add £2 to players’ match fees on Saturday, August 17 and to provide a photo of them and their opponents before the start that can be shared on their social media channels to spread the world.

More than 700 cricketers across the county showed their support, and Mr Strauss paid tribute saying: "A thank-you goes to those in Worcestershire who signed up to the OneClub initiative aimed at all games across all levels being played in the county this Saturday.

“It’s amazing that clubs in Worcestershire want to play their part

"A huge thanks from me. Together, hopefully, we can raise awareness and a huge amount of money.”

Specially commissioned, limited-edition red wristbands reading "Be a part of it" were provided for wear during matches and a stencil and tin of red spray paint were also supplied so the ‘Worcestershire Cricket Goes Red’ message could be displayed on outfields.

Ruth Strauss was diagnosed in December 2017, with a rare form of lung cancer which affects non-smokers, and died in Australia 12 months later at the age of 46, leaving two sons.

As an echo of the hugely successful Jane McGrath Day, in which the Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia turns pink for breast cancer, the second day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's on August 15 was chosen as the big occasion to raise awareness of the Ruth Strauss Foundation founded by Andrew.

The Red Day at Lord's raised a grand total of £382,462 from donations.

The One Club initiative is a set of values, supported by a strong expectation of attitudes and behaviours to drive Worcestershire Cricket forward.

The attitudes and behaviours are: Humility, Teamwork, Integrity, Commitment and Community.
