OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Omaha firefighters raced to the Pines at Q Plaza near 86th and R Plaza late Sunday night after flames erupted at the apartment complex, according to Omaha Fire Department.

Officials with the Omaha Fire Department told 6 News firefighters rescued an elderly woman that was trapped inside a unit. The woman was trapped inside her third floor apartment.

It took crews nearly an hour to put out the flames, according to OFD. Fire crews said the flames went from the ground level at the entry stairs, all the way up to the attic and then the roof.

No firefighters were hurt but they had trouble getting the fire under control because the roof was difficult to break through.

20 to 30 people are now without a home, according to OFD. Officials told us it could have been worse if the firewall partition between buildings wasn’t effective.

Fire investigators said the cause of the fire is due to accidental improper disposal of smoking materials on a deck.
