PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The search is over. Three dogs have been chosen to replace the beloved canine mascot, Archie, in Festival Ballet Providence’s “The Nutcracker.”

Teddy, Phoebe and Bronx were chosen as finalists from an original group of nearly 50 dogs that auditioned for the role in early December.

Two dogs were selected by a panel of judges after a round of callbacks on Tuesday. A third dog was voted for on the company’s Instagram page; more than 1,000 votes were received in under seven hours.

The corgi, golden doodle and golden retriever will attend rehearsals next week and alternate in performances of “The Nutcracker,” which will be at the Providence Performing Arts Center from Dec. 21 to Dec. 23.

The auditions sparked from the announcement that Archie would be retiring from his role. The new canine cast members will be the first to take stage since Archie had his first performance 19 years ago.
