PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A report of gunshots brought Providence police to the city’s Silver Lake neighborhood overnight.

Police said they responded to Laurel Hill Avenue around 2:30 a.m. and met with the person who called in the report, who said her friend had been shot at.

As they spoke, a second eyewitness approached and told police that a black vehicle – possibly a late model Buick or Toyota bearing Massachusetts registration – pulled up to her vehicle and two men got out while one stayed in the car.

One of the men, she reported, walked up to her passenger-side window and pointed what she described as a black rifle at her and told her not to move, according to police. It was at that point when one of the other suspects fired at the caller’s friend.

Police said another person later returned to the scene after transporting the victim to the hospital.

Whether the victim was shot or injured in any way was not specified by police.

At least one shell casing was found on the ground, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation.
