PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A former Providence councilman faces a judge Wednesday to learn his fate after pleading no contest to embezzling money from a youth sports team.
According to the state’s sentencing filing, Kevin Jackson spent over $127,000 meant for athletes on the Providence Cobras track team on things for himself, such as clothing, cigars, and wine.
Jackson requested probation and no jail time after a sentencing a few months ago.
State prosecutors asked a judge to sentence Jackson to three years behind bars.
Prosecutors and attorneys representing Jackson have already reached an agreement that requires Jackson to pay over $100,000 in restitution.
The court said it has received more than 40 letters supporting Jackson and asking for leniency.
Jackson represented Ward 3 for over two decades before he was recalled from office.
Jackson turned down a plea deal offered by the attorney general in December 2017.
