PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) wants to ensure it’s prepared for any disaster that leads to an evacuation.
PEMA conducted a temporary shelter exercise at Providence Career and Technical Academy on Wednesday dubbed the “Operation Fallout Shelter.”
Providence police and fire departments, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other agencies took part in the exercise to put their emergency response plans to the test.
“This is a great opportunity for us to exercise the plans that we have – written and existing – identify areas for improvement and areas of strength and go forward from there,” Deputy Director of PEMA Clara Decerbo said. “This has been successful so far and a very good learning experience for all of us.”
The PCTA was chosen for this exercise because it’s one of the buildings in Providence designated as a shelter.
