PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island municipalities have been awarded nearly $25 million in federal funding to help revitalize local neighborhoods and support economic development and affordable housing programs.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed says the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded community grants. The Rhode Island Democrat says the grants help communities address pressing priorities and capital improvement projects.
Cranston, East Providence, Pawtucket, Providence, Warwick and Woonsocket each received awards. The state also received funding.
Rhode Island communities are getting $16.3 million from the Community Development Block Grant program, $6 million from the Home Investment Partnership program, $1.4 million from the Emergency Shelter Grant program and $1.2 million from the Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS program.
Reed says he’s working to protect funding for the programs, which the administration has proposed cutting.
