PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Two by two, a parade of people appeared before a judge in Providence District Court on Tuesday, hours after they were arrested during a night of violence and destruction in the city.

Stores were damaged and looted, police cruisers were vandalized — including one that was set ablaze — and bricks and other objects were thrown at officers, according to police. As many as 100 people got inside the Providence Place mall, which had just reopened on Monday.

Providence police said they made 65 arrests, of which 35 were Providence residents, 25 were from surrounding cities and towns, and five came from Massachusetts. They ranged in age from 15 to 43 years old, with seven being juveniles. (See the full list of defendants below.)

Two guns were recovered by police during the rioting and looting, R.I. State Police Col. James Manni said.

Magistrate Judge Patrick O’Neill put it mildly when he called it a “very bad night.” He released most of the defendants on surety bail after they were arraigned on charges that included breaking and entering, receiving stolen goods, and resisting arrest.

“It wasn’t even worth it ’cause then I got charged,” D’Siah Gonsalves said Tuesday.

Gonsalves, 20, of North Providence, pleaded no contest to shoplifting. The judge said the charge will vanish after a year if he stays out of trouble.

“I didn’t even take nothing, to be honest,” Gonsalves added. “I was walking, some kid gave me shoes. I was walking with the shoes. It was a mistake. When I got pulled over, they were like, ‘what are you doing with the shoes?’ so I told him, and put me in handcuffs.”

“I sat in a cell for almost 12 hours, just sitting there doing nothing,” he added. “I regret that.”

Most of the defendants are scheduled to return to court in September.
