RALEIGH, N.C. — Local Animal Control officers are dealing with an uptick in calls.

The increase in calls is largely because of the weather, officials said. In the spring and summer, more people are outside taking advantage of warmer temperatures, but dog owners are not always following the rules.

Recently, Raleigh has been responding to more than 50 calls a day. Many of the calls involve stray animals, noise complaints and sick or injured wildlife, but most calls deal with animal neglect concerns and leash law violations.

According to Ashley Stanten, a supervisor with Animal Control, the situation can quickly get out of hand when a dog is not on a leash.

"There will be another citizen somewhere else in the park whose dog is not as friendly or as well behaved as theirs," Staten said, "and sometimes their animals do get into fights."

If you suspect animal cruelty, make sure to report it. You can find your county's Animal Control contact numbers online. Wake County's are:
  • Garner: 919-772-8810
  • Holly Springs: 919-557-9111
  • Raleigh: 919-831-6311
  • Cary: 919-319-4517
  • All other areas of Wake County: 919-856-6911
