RALEIGH, N.C. — Temperatures shattered records Thursday in Raleigh as spring made an appearance a few months ahead of schedule.

Temperatures in Raleigh hit 79 degrees Thursday afternoon. The record for the Feb. 7 high in Raleigh was 76 degrees.

With a temperature of 78 degrees at noon, Fayetteville already broke its previous record high for Feb. 7, which was 77 degrees back in 2017. Temperatures in Fayetteville peaked Thursday at 81 degrees.

The low temperature of 60 degrees at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Thursday morning also broke the record for warmest low temperature. The previous record warm low for Feb. 7 was 59 degrees in 1904.

WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said temperatures will remain warm overnight and will still be unseasonably mild on Friday, with a high of 70 degrees.

"The jackets you didn't need this afternoon, you won't need this evening," he said.

Following another day of spring-like temperatures, the Triangle will see a 40 degree temperature drop as a cold front moves in overnight Friday. The low on Saturday morning will be 30 degrees, Maze said.

We could be back in the 60s by Wednesday of next week, with above-normal temperatures sticking around for mid-February.
