Raleigh rapper among Moogfest performers

DURHAM, N.C. — Moogfest will be celebrating its 15th year this April with a string of first time festival performers.

The festival, which is devoted to art, music and technology, will be held April 25-28 at several walkable venues throughout downtown Durham. Organizers announced its initial lineup on Thursday.

Joining Moogfest for the first time will be GAS (the project of German composer and Kompakt co-founder Wolfgang Voigt), polymathic songwriter and producer Kimbra and Herzblut Recordings founder and techno producer Stephan Bodzin.

Returning performers include Raleigh rapper and producer Mez, ambient experimentalist Tim Hecker, The Konoyo Ensemble, DJ and producer Matthew Dear and Swedish techno minimalist The Field.

Songwriter and founding member of Depeche Mode, Martin Gore, will also be on hand for a creative discussion.

The festival will once again host a series of durational or long-form performances. New York City-based noise rock band A Place to Bury Strangers and IDM artist, sound designer and coder Richard Devine will each present four-hour performances.

Composer William Basinski, whose new album features samples of two massive black holes merging more than a billion years ago, will lead the this year's Sleep Concert. The popular event includes an eight hour musical journey designed to put festival goers to sleep and then wake them up.

Just as with previous years, there will be daytime and nighttime programming that include workshops, presentations and performances. Artists Cuckoo and Mylar Melodies will lead workshops and performances.

American Tobacco Campus will be hosting interactive music technology exhibitions in the Modular Marketplace, including a Moog Circuit Bending Challenge.

More performances and presenters will be announced closer to the event.

Tickets are on sale now. General admission passes are $249, and VIP tickets are $499. Engineer passes, which are $1,500, include a two-day synth-building workshop.
