RALEIGH, N.C.Urban Axes opened its first Triangle location in Durham last year. Now the axe-throwing venue is coming to Raleigh.

The space is slated to open next spring near Big Boss Brewing and Lynnwood Brewing Concern. It will have 16 to 20 targets for up to 120 axe throwers and will feature a bar offering craft beer and wine.

Founders said the space will closely resemble the Durham location, which opened in October 2018 at at 619 Foster St.

As indoor axe-throwing increases in popularity across the country, Urban Axes co-owner Krista Paton said safety is a priority, and newbies are always welcome.

"Most people haven’t thrown an ax before," Paton said. "People come in here and it’s kind of an even playing field. No one really knows how to do it, so we get to teach everyone, and the other thing about it is it’s super accessible and anyone can be good at it. We give you an ax-throwing coach that will stay with you for the whole event. We teach you how to throw safely and comfortably one-on-one first."

At the Durham location, guests pay $40 per person for a two-and-a-half hour session.

Another axe-throwing venue, Epic Axes, opened in its first location inside the Southern Charred restaurant on Glenwood Avenue this year.
