AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- South Carolina students who are in undergrad either starting as freshman or transferring from another school can get in-state tuition.

AU hopes this will increase their student population and save students thousands of dollars.

In 2018, Augusta University had its record number of incoming freshman; 1000.

Provost at Augusta University Gretchen Caughmann said, "We're hoping this year to probably increase by maybe a couple hundred."

For fall 2019 the goal is around 1500 students, to help them reach that Augusta University is offering in-state tuition to all students living in South Carolina.

Students just have to have lived there for at least a year.

"Augusta University is on a really aggressive growth agenda we believe we have capacity and we want to build even more so we feel like it's an opportunity to reach out in a very affordable way," said Caughman.

Right now in-state tuition is 7,000 dollars and out-of state tuition is around 21,000, which means students could save around 15-thousand dollars a year.

They will have access to Augusta University's undergrad programs, as long as their is room in them.

"All of the programs in Pamplin College, in the Hull College of Business, the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences, and Education, all of those will be open," she said.

It's a chance to show more students and communities what AU has to offer.

Caughman said, "We believe that as our geographic reach broadens we will become more regionally and nationally known."

In state tuition for all South Carolina residents starts this fall.

AU already offers in-state tuition for some graduate programs-- for students living in Aiken and Edgefield counties, through their Border County Waivers.

It's unclear when the university will begin the scholarship.
