AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A grandmother has been arrested and charged after deputies were called to her apartment by an employee with the Department of Family and Children Services.

According to an incident report, 53-year-old Carole Brown was with her 10-year-old grandchild at her home in the Fox Den Apartments on January 24th when deputies arrived with DFACS, who was there to take the child into their custody.

When deputies asked Brown how the child came into contact with cocaine, she apparently told them she was snorting the drug when the child walked in. She said she didn't want the child to see what she was doing, so she offered the child her phone. That's how she believes the child came into contact with the drug, from what was on the phone.

The child tested positive for cocaine during a doctor's appointment days earlier. The doctor is who notified DFACS, who in turn notified the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. Investigators have a copy of that positive test.

Brown has been arrested and charged with Cruelty to Children in the 2nd Degree. She was booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
