RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia War Memorial hosted a special event Saturday to commemorate National Flag Day.

The war memorial has been celebrating all week and created the ‘Hill of Heroes.’ Volunteers planted 12,000 American flags hilside next to the Shrine of Memory. The flags honor the 12,000 Virginia heroes who lost their lives from World War II to the present day.

The ceremony celebrated the adoption of the American Flag on June 14, 1777. U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger was the keynote speaker.

The flags will be on display through Friday, June 21.
