Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin said Virginia Senate Democrats are making a "mistake" by leaving the deal to bring a new arena for the Washington Capitals and Wizards out of the state budget -- which deals another blow to the project but doesn't kill it.
Moving forward with the proposed $2 billion sports and entertainment district in Alexandria's Potomac Yard section, which would include a new arena, a performing arts venue, retail shops, hotels and more, has been a top priority for Gov. Youngkin.
Youngkin, who announced the deal in December alongside Ted Leonsis, the CEO of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which owns the teams, has touted the project as a "big win" that would create roughly 30,000 jobs and bring in $12 billion in economic impact.

On the fourth day of a complex jury trial, 20-year-old Amari Pollard pleaded guilty to the murder of Shawn Jackson. Now, for the first time, the public has access to FBI surveillance footage the day of the deadly Huguenot High School graduation shooting.
Since the judge accepted the plea agreement, in the eyes of the court, Amari Pollard is guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting that killed 18-year-old Shawn Jackson on June 6, 2023.
However, the judge himself admitted it was a "factually complicated" case. The guilty plea does not change the fact that Pollard and his legal team spent four days arguing that the shooting was in self-defense.

A timeline video compiled by the FBI shows the moments leading up to and immediately following the deadly shooting that occurred after Huguenot High School's graduation ceremony on June 6, 2023.
Recent graduate Shawn Jackson and his step-father Lorenzo Smith were killed in the shooting. Five other people were shot but survived.
The video was made available to the public following the conviction and sentencing of Amari Pollard, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection to Jackson's death.
Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards is expected to discuss the results of the trial for Amari Pollard, who pleaded guilty to two charges, including first-degree murder, in connection to the deadly Huguenot High School graduation shooting that occurred in June last year.
Pollard pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection to the death of 18-year-old Shawn Jackson. He agreed to a plea deal on the fourth day of his scheduled five-day jury trial and was sentenced to 43 years with 18 years suspended.
Questions still remain, however, as to who was responsible for the shooting of Smith and five other victims who survived their injuries.
