Severe storms leave some behind damage in central, north Georgia

ATLANTA — Severe storms left behind some damage in central and north Georgia Thursday before quickly moving to our south and east.

Officials in Meriwether County said numerous trees were down and at least four of them fell on homes after severe thunderstorms moved through Thursday afternoon.

Earlier Thursday, storms left behind damage in Floyd County.

A severe thunderstorm watch issed for Thursday afternoon was canceled for most of north Georgia after some storms rolled through in the early afternoon.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said there is a possiblity for more storms Friday and an even greater chance Saturday.

5:13 p.m.

Downed power lines in Meriwether County have blocked all lanes of Georgia 109 at Fire Tower Road. Several trees have also fallen, at least four on homes, according to emergency managers.

4:30 p.m.

The severe thunderstorm watch has been cancled for most counties in the metro Atlanta area.

3:45 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Morgan, Putnam, Hancock and Greene counties until 4:30 p.m.

3:40 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Baldwin, Putnam and Jasper counties until 4:30 p.m.

3:35 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Fayette, Clayton and Henry counties until 4:15 p.m. Damaging hail and wind is possible.

3:24 p.m

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Monroe and Lamar counties and extended for Pike and Upson counties until 3:45 p.m.

2:49 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Meriwether, Pike, Upson and Troup counties until 3:30 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Clarke, Wilkes, Oglethorpe and Madison counties until 3:30 p.m.

1:45 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Counties including Barrow, Banks, Butts, Carroll, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Fayette, Forsyth, Greene, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Heard, Haralson, Henry, Jackson, Jasper, Lamar, Madison, Meriwether, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Ogelthorpe, Paulding, Pike, Putnam, Upson, Rockdale, Spalding, Troup, and Walton counties until 10 p.m.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz tweeted about damage to a home in Rome. He says that more rain and storms are coming later this afternoon.

Trees and power lines down in Pickens County now, too... heaviest storm is moving over White County toward Rabun & Habersham now.

7:03 a.m.:

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz says that an emergency manager reported a tree on a power line and a transformer fire in Hickory Flat, Cherokee County.

7 a.m.: 

Rain has reached Midtown Atlanta.

6:44 a.m.:

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz said there are reports of trees down and power outages in Rome, Floyd county this morning.

6:40 a.m.:

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz said there are reports of trees down with a line of storms in Cedartown (Polk Co.). These storms will bring very heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and lightning through metro Atlanta over the next couple hours.

6:26 a.m.:

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Cherokee and Pickens counties until 7 a.m.

6:19 a.m.:

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said a strong storm that moved into Bartow County has a history of downing trees. The storm is moving in the northeast direction.

6:04 a.m.:

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for north Bartow County until 6:45 a.m.

5:36 a.m.:

Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Chattooga, Floyd, Polk, and Gordon counties until 6:15 a.m.

5:23 a.m.:

Storms are moving into west Georgia over the next 30-45 minutes.

4:34 a.m.:

JUST IN: A severe thunderstorm watch has been extended to include Cleburne County in eastern Alabama.
