Severe storms, heavy rains wash out roads, down trees across north Georgia

ATLANTA — Another line of storms moved through parts of the metro Friday after a fast-moving storm system produced tornado warnings and watches in the morning.

We continue to receive reports of damage throughout metro Atlanta and north Georgia. There are thousands of power outages.

Severe Weather Team 2's Cheif Meteorologist Glenn Burns and Meteorologist Brad Nitz are tracking isolated showers following a cold front that brought two strong lines of storms through metro Atlanta Friday.

Severe Weather Team 2 has been tracking the system all week as it moved across the country.

Meteorologist Brian Monahan and Katie Walls tracked four Tornado Warnings and a Tornado Watch for several counties during Channel 2 Action News This Morning as the system caused destruction across the region.

Triple Team Traffic's Mark Arum reported on how the storm system created a traffic nightmare on the roads throughout the metro this morning.

A Flash Flood Warning is currently active for Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Harris, Meriwether, Pike, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Rockdale, Spalding, Barrow, Newton, Walton, Banks, Clarke, Hall, Jackson and Madison counties.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety is reminding people to "Turn around, don't drown," as roads remain flooded across parts of north Georgia.

Mutiple power poles are down along Brockett Road in DeKalb County

Brookhaven says Hampton Hall Drive at Hallcrest Drive is closed for wires down.

Gwinnett County has just released an updated list of road closures from this morning's storms.

Channel 2's Dave Huddleston just got to Commerce where Crooked Creek has risen very high. Several roads are closed in the area.

DeKalb EMA says a Flood Warning has been issued for areas along the South River.

Heavy downpours are moving through metro Atlanta.

The Banks County Sheriff's Office is warning people to stay away from Peyton Road after posting video of a large chunk of the road that was washed out and now has a stream of water flowing through it.

Atlanta Firefighters had to help a man trapped inside a box truck that was crushed by a large oak tree.

2 p.m.

A listener to WSB Radio sent in video of a raging creek.

1:45 p.m.

Severe Weather Team 2 is tracking another line of storms moving toward metro Atlanta right now. Heavy rain and gusty wind is the main threats.

1:20 p.m.

A major road is closed in Commerce because of flooding. Highway 441 is shut down near I-85 and a nearby shopping center is flooded.

1:10 p.m.

Atlanta Fire Rescue says wires have come down on a delivery truck in Buckhead and a person is trapped inside. We are headed to the scene and will bring you live updates on Channel 2 Action News at 4 p.m.

1:00 p.m.

As floodwaters rise, GDOT warns drivers to "turn around, don't drown."

12:50 p.m.: 

Atlanta Fire Rescue warns everyone to stay safe and alert. Even though the rain is gone flood waters are still rising in some areas.

12:10 p.m.:

As of 12:10 p.m., there were 12,000+ Georgia Power customers without power.

12:01 p.m.: 

Channel 2's Kristen Holloway was at the scene in Johns Creek on Channel 2 Action News at Noon where a house was destroyed by fire caused by a lightning strike. No one was injured.

Brookhaven police reports a tree and power lines down on Woodrow Way near Inman Drive.

Henry County government says there are several roads closed due to the severe weather.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz said the severe weather risk is moving east over the next few hours.

10:18 a.m.: 

Columns Drive near Johnson Ferry Road in Cobb County is shut down due to flooding.

9:55 a.m.:

Channel 2's Lauren Pozen is at the scene where an apartment building was sliced in half by a tree.

9:49 a.m.:

Georgia Power reports 12,000+ customers without power as of 9:45 a.m.

Georgia Power reports 21,000+ customers without power as of 8:45 a.m.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for southeastern Rockdale, central Oconee, NW Morgan, Walton and Newton counties until 9:15 a.m.

Banks County schools are closed today due to the storms.

Tornado Warning issued for Banks, Jackson, Madison counties until 8:15 a.m.

7:45 a.m.:

The Tornado Warning has been expired but the area is under a Thunderstorm Warning.

7:39 a.m.:

The Tornado Warning has been dropped for Oconee, Barrow, Clarke.

7:29 a.m.: 

Walton County has been dropped from the Tornado Warning.

7:22 a.m.:

Tornado Warning issued for Oconee, Barrow, Clarke, Walton and Jackson counties until 7:45 a.m.

7:20 a.m.: 

Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach found branches from tree that cut through top floor of apartment building in Peachtree Corners.

Emergency manager reports several trees and power lines down in Gwinnett, a possible lightning fire as well.

7:07 a.m.:

Channel 2's Tony Thomas reports that power is out at his home in Gwinnett County after a large tree fell in his front yard and driveway.

There is a report of a tree down at Five Forks Trickum Road and Killian Hill/Oleander.

Banks County Schools will be delayed 2 hours on Friday due to the weather.

6:45 a.m.: 

Heavy rain and lightning is still a problem for parts of the southern metro and northeast metro.

6:30 a.m.:

The Tornado Warning has been dropped for Habersham and Rabun counties but severe thunderstorm warning remains for the counties.

6:21 a.m.: 

The Georgia Department of Public Safety is urging drivers to slow down and have their lights on this morning.

6:16 a.m.: 

Shallowford Road is shutdown between Shagbark and Jones Road due to multiple power lines and tress down in the area.

6:10 a.m.: 

Channel 2's Lauren Pozen says a tree is down on Connally Drive in East Point. Georgia Power is on the scene because wires were taken down.

6 a.m.:

White and Hall counties are no longer under a Tornado Warning. Habersham and Rabun counties are still under the warning.

5:54 a.m.:

The Tornado Warning has been extended for parts of Habersham and Rabun counties until 6:30 a.m.

5:50 a.m.:

Tornado Warning issued for Hall County and parts of White County until 6 a.m.

5:47 a.m.:

Georgia Power is reporting that more than 24,000 customers are without power.

5:26 a.m.: 

The Tornado Warning has been expired for all of metro Atlanta.

5:18 a.m.: 

Fulton County has been dropped from the Tornado Warning but the warning is still in effect for parts of Gwinnett and Forsyth counties.

5:04 a.m.:

Tornado Warning issued for Southwest Forsyth County, Northwest Gwinnett, northeast Fulton County until 5:30 a.m.

4:42 a.m.:

Georgia Power currently reporting 4,700+ power outages across north Georgia as storms move through.

4:37 a.m.:

Channel 2's Linda Stouffer spotted a lightning bolt during a live shot with Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan.

4:08 a.m.:

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said that the main impact most people will experience will be heavy rain and gusty wind.

4:03 a.m.:

Butts County Schools are on a 2-hour delay due to the storms.

3:57 a.m.: 

As of 3:55 a.m., Georgia Power reports more than 7,000 power outages across north Georgia as storms roll through.

3:32 a.m.:

Channel 2's Lauren Pozen is at the scene of a crash into a power pole. Some report power outages in the area.

3:17 a.m.: 

Heavy rain and embedded strong storms are moving in to north Georgia right now -- the flooding, gusty wind, and isolated brief spin up tornado is going up now.

3 a.m.:

Tornado Watch has been extended into Troup, Meriwether, Pike and Upson counties and locations south. These robust storms are moving northeastward out of AL into N GA and will cause a stormy commute.

2:41 a.m.:

Lightning, gusty wind and heavy rain are moving through Randolph (AL), Cleburne (AL), Carroll and Haralson - heading rapidly northeast. This next round of storms will pack a punch for the morning commute.

1:58 a.m.:

The storms are moving northeast through Alabama.

12:35 a.m.: 

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been canceled for many counties but remains in effect for Troup, Meriwether, Spalding, Butts, Pike, Upson and Lamar.
