MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - The Montgomery Police Department is investigating several cases of vandalism of area bank ATM machines.

The first incident happened around 10 p.m. Monday. Police responded to a bank in the 6200 block of Atlanta Highway and found a damaged ATM. Police have yet to determine if any money was taken from the machine.

The police department does not identify specific businesses, as a matter of policy, but WSFA 12 News has independently confirmed the case involves the Wells Fargo branch on Atlanta Highway and Bell Road. A photo shows the facility’s damaged ATM.

“Some Wells Fargo ATMs in Alabama sustained damage in recent days, including our Bell Road branch ATM in Montgomery,” said Michael H. Gray, the Assistant Vice President, Corporate Communications Florida & Southeast Regions. “Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our customers and team members. We are assessing damage and coordinating with appropriate authorities.”

During the overnight hours, police also responded to two other calls in the 2700 block of Zelda Road regarding the same type of damage call. The first call was at 2:48 a.m. and the second was at 6:50 a.m.

In both instances, investigators found that an ATM had been damaged but that entry into the machines had not been made. Serveral banks have branches in that area, and it’s unclear which was victimized. Wells Fargo said its branch there was unaffected.

No suspects have been identified.

These cases of vandalism coincided with local protests involving the death of George Floyd. While the Montgomery protests remained peaceful, there were several instances of damage reported overnight including the burning of 10 vehicles.

At the same time as the vehicle fires, Montgomery police responded to the 4200 block of Norman Bridge Road in reference to an alarm call at a pawn shop. At the scene, MPD found forced entry and property stolen.

It’s unclear if any of the cases are connected, but each remains under investigation.
