Driver dies days after passenger shot him on busy northeast Charlotte road

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police said a driver has died days after his passenger shot him in the middle of a busy northeast Charlotte street last week.

According to officers, Kehlan Johnson, 41, was riding in a Nissan sedan on W.T. Harris near Duncroft Lane when he shot the driver, 20-year-old Darnel Mills, and left the scene.

Police have not said what led to the shooting.

George Allen said he was headed to the grocery store around 9 a.m. when he noticed the car stopped in the turning lane.

"And I saw a leg hanging out of the car, and as I approached the light, I said, 'Something doesn't look right, let me turn around,'" Allen said.

Allen told Channel 9 when he got out of the car, he found a man who had been shot in the head while the world rushed past.

"No one paid attention that there was something going on there," he said. "There was a tragedy. God didn't allow me to see his face."

Mills was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, but he died from his injuries on Wednesday.

Johnson is charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
