GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — An inmate suing the South Carolina prison system says he was stabbed inside his cell and couldn’t find an officer to help him.
News outlets report 34-year-old Devodus Rouse filed the lawsuit this month, claiming irresponsibility by prison staff and the lack of manpower inside his wing at Perry Correctional Institution led to his assault.
The lawsuit says Rouse was stabbed multiple times in July 2017 by two other inmates. He says he waited at least 15 minutes for a correctional officer to help him. When he returned from the hospital, his attackers were still housed in his area.
The Greenville News says Rouse is serving a 25-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter.
South Carolina Department of Corrections spokeswoman Chrysti Shain says they don’t comment on pending litigation.
