LUMBERTON, N.C. (WNCN) – A North Carolina police officer was hit and killed while responding to a crash on Interstate 95, Saturday morning.

Lumberton Police officer Jason Quick was dispatched to the wreck in the northbound lanes near Fayetteville Road around 6:10 a.m.

While on the scene, a vehicle hit the 31-year-old officer just before 7 a.m.

Lumberton firefighters and officers later arrived on scene and immediately helped the injured officer, according to authorities.

Local first responders transported him to Southeastern Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Troopers said that a driver hit Quick as he was attempting to walk across the northbound lanes from the inside lane to the right side shoulder. As of Saturday afternoon, troopers had not released if there were going to be any charges for that driver.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, officials shut down this section of I-95. It reopened around noon.

Quick leaves behind a wife and two children, according to Lumberton Rescue and EMS.

“Officer Quick, your life mattered,” wrote Lumberton Rescue and EMS in a post.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Officer Jason Quick,” Lumberton Police wrote in a release.
