Human remains found in a large bag just a few yards off a road in a rural area of Ohio have been identified as the body of a man last seen in 2018, authorities said.

Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader said in a release that the Montgomery County, Ohio, coroner's office identified the body through fingerprints as Shane Walls, 36, of Pike County.

The cause of death hasn't been determined, but Reader said his office is conducting a homicide investigation into the death.

The sheriff's office said authorities were informed in February that Walls was missing and was last seen in December.

Reader said three mushroom hunters found the bag about 3 p.m. Monday and called authorities.
