A 7-year-old child in Mississippi has died after being struck by at least one bullet when somebody shot into his father's home.

The Lincoln County deputy coroner, Ricky Alford, says Quantavious Allen, Jr., died Wednesday night at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, less than four hours after being shot in Brookhaven.

Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins tells the Daily Leader that the boy was inside the home he shared with his father and sister when someone drove by and used "an assault-style weapon" to shoot into the house.

Quantavious recently finished first grade.

Collins said no arrest was made immediately and the shooting remains under investigation.
