The Village of Bridgeport is currently in a state of fiscal emergency. And after some digging, all signs point to one person.
Agnes Hess, the former fiscal officer, left Bridgeport in 2016. In fact, the village has been labeled unauditable for the since 2016.
Some Bridgeport residents believe Hess should resolve the issue. “I think if that’s what she took away, that’s what she should have to pay back,” said Chuck Osucha, Bridgeport visitor.
A former clerk-treasurer of Bridgeport offered no remorse for the former fiscal officer. “There’s no excuse for it, there’s no excuse,” said Betty Riley, resident of Bridgeport. “I was audited every two years and I always had a clean audit.”
Bridgeport Mayor Dave Smith offered no comment.
