Anderson County resident can now get Voluntary Travel IDs in Frankfort

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Voluntary Travel IDs are now being offered to Anderson County residents in Frankfort.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says it is expanding the REAL ID-compliant card access to Anderson County residents. Those Anderson County residents who have an existing driver’s license, permit or personal ID can visit the KYTC driver’s license office at the Transportation Cabinet headquarters in Frankfort to upgrade to a Voluntary Travel ID.

Voluntary Travel IDs are Kentucky’s REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses, accepted for U.S. commercial air travel and restricted federal facility access once federal enforcement begins October 1, 2020. The cards serve as one of several forms of IDs accepted at airport security checkpoints, military bases and federal buildings that require identification. They do not have to be presented with a passport to board a flight.

In September, the cabinet announced the state is undertaking a new approach to offer Voluntary Travel IDs at regional application site locations staffed by KYTC employees, versus the former county-by-county rollout model at Circuit Court Clerk offices. The shift was an outcome of a summer pilot program in two counties that identified unsustainable staffing and workload issues for Circuit Court Clerk staff.
