HOPEWELL, Va. -- The family of a Richmond firefighter shot to death on Thanksgiving day 2019 is still waiting for an arrest to be made.

Lt. Ashley Berry died shielding her five-year-old son from a barrage of gunfire, andher killer still hasn't been charged.

"We just want to make sure people don't forget about her, that her story isn't forgotten and justice is served for her as it is to anyone who's tragically lost a family member," said Berry’s cousin, Chenice Johnson.

Early Thanksgiving morning, Berry was shot to death outside a duplex at the corner of Winston Churchill Drive and Oaklawn Boulevard.

Crime Insider sources say she was not the intended target.

"She was at the bottom near the mailbox and getting ready to get into a car, when they started shooting,” said Johnson. “She grabbed her son and flung him a few feet out of the way to protect him."

Hopewell investigators say they continue to follow leads and put their investigation together.

While Berry's family anxiously awaits justice, they say time is flying by and they want closure. They say those who pulled the trigger don't deserve their freedom

"I'm hopeful and we have faith that arrests will be made," said Johnson.

If you have information about the Thanksgiving Day shooting, Hopewell police say you can share it anonymously, at 541-2202.
