WalletHub released a

, "2019's Most Sinful States in America," and Tennessee is high on the list. The Volunteer State ranks fifth, to be exact.

Nevada takes the top spot, while Florida, California, and Texas help round out the top five. The study claims that Vermont, Maine, North Dakota, Nebraska and Idaho are the least sinful states in the U.S.

To get the rankings, WalletHub compared the states across seven areas: anger and hatred, jealousy, excesses and vices, greed, lust, vanity and laziness.

"Anger and hatred" encompasses violent crimes per capita, sex offenders per capita, share of hostile internet comments and the state's bullying rate among other factors. The study ranks Tennessee as the third state with the most violent crimes per capita.

Last year, another WalletHub report claimed Knoxville was the 32nd most sinful city in America.
