ACCIDENT — The Northern Huskies’ wrestling squad had its first home dual meets of the season this past week and treated the fans to three consecutive victories.
The Husky grapplers blew past the Frankfort Falcons last Wednesday (Jan. 8) before taking down the Moorefield Yellow Jackets and then Frankfort again the following day (Jan. 9).
The results pushed Northern’s dual meet season record to 6-1 and 19-4 overall when counting dual meet tournaments.
Frankfort at Northern (Jan. 8)
The Huskies enjoyed a 60-13 win over the Falcons in the home season debut at The Igloo last Wednesday.
The match started with Mitchell Wilburn (106 pounds) and Riley Hoenstine (113) picking up forfeiture victories before Jacob Brenneman (120) logged a first round pinfall over Jones to put Northern quickly up 18-0. Forfeits to Shane Fink (126) and Austin Ravenscroft (132) then widened the gap to 30-0.
The Falcons got on the board in the 138 bout as Kris Sherman edged Chase Taylor in a 3-1 decision. Then Noak Kiszka recorded a tech fall over Northern’s Colby Clark (145) to close the gap. However, Frankfort’s only other points came in a forfeit later in the match to Zander Parsons (195).
Hunter Wilhelm (170) picked up a pin for the Huskies in 1:37 against Jacob Logsdon before Nathan Reams (182) rounded out the competitive bouts with a pin over Frankfort’s Nathan Armatrout.
Devin Smith (152), Josh Thomas (160), and Jake Beeman (220) picked up the remaining forfeiture wins for the Huskies. There was no match in the 285.
Moorefield at Northern (Jan. 9)
The Huskies roared back from an early deficit to edge the Yellow Jackets 39-36 in their first of two matches last Thursday.
The match began in the 170 class, and Moorefield struck first when Isaac Van Meter pinned Wilhelm in the second round. Then A. Herberger (182) followed with a quick pin over Reams to push the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 12-0 which then ballooned to 24-0 after forfeits to R. Herberger (195) and M. Delauder (220).
The Huskies bounced back in the 285 bout as Beeman pulled off a pivotal 7-6 decision over G. Miller. Hoenstine (106) added a first-round pin over L. Spitzer to make it 24-9, then the score completely shifted after four consecutive forfeit victories to Brenneman (113), Fink (120), Ravenscroft (126), and Taylor (132) put Northern up 33-24.
Moorefield jumped back in front 36-33 after D. Davis (138) pinned Clark in the second round, and then T. Clayton (152) pinned Hayden Lowendick. However, a forfeit to Thomas pushed the Huskies back in front for the win.
Frankfort at Northern (Jan. 9)
The Huskies’ second match of the night resulted in another victory over the Falcons, this time by the score of 48-18.
Reams began the match in the 182 class with a tight 7-6 decision over Bland to put Northern up 3-0. The next competitive bout came in the 120 where Fink pinned Frankfort’s Jones in the second round.
The match would finish with the two teams splitting the remaining four bouts. The Falcons enjoyed pinfall victories by Sherman (145) and Kiszka (152) before Wilhelm (160) secured a quick pin of his own and Thomas (170) logged a 6-1 decision over Logsdon.
Forfeiture wins were awarded to Northern’s Beeman (220), Hoenstine (106), Brenneman (113), Ravenscroft (126), and Taylor (138). Parson (195) was awarded a forfeit for Frankfort, and there were no matches in the 285 or 132 classes.
