SISTERSVILLE — Lincoln’s girls soccer team opened up the season in dominating fashion with a 5-0 road victory over Tyler Consolidated last night.
Victoria Sturm scored four goals while Kierstn Posey added one. Sturm’s scored two goals before the ten minutes had even passed to give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead. After Posey netted a goal in the 24th minute, Sturm added one more goal in the 36th minute to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead at halftime. Sturm’s final goal just four minutes into the second half rounded out the scoring.
Freshman goalie Delaney Haller got the shutout in her high school debut.
The Cougars host Braxton County on Tuesday in their home opener.
Minor League Baseball
BLACK BEARS 8, Doubledays 1 (Game 1): West Virginia opened up a twin bill with a commanding win over the Auburn Doubledays, as Blake Sabol (2-for-4) and Matthew Frazier (2-for-3) each recorded multi-hit games.
Fernando Villegas hit his first home run of the season in the win while Will Matthiesen and Cory Wood each registered a pair of RBIs.
BLACK BEARS 6, Doubledays 5 (Game 2): The Black Bears rallied with four runs in the sixth to complete a double-header sweep of the Auburn Doubledays.
The Black Bears entered the sixth down 5-2, but RBI knocks from Matt Gorski, Brendt Citta and Cory Wood proved to be the difference in the big inning. Citta went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the win to lead the way for West Virginia, which is now 36-29 on the season and a half game out of first place in the New York Penn League Pinckney division.
