Looking for care for loved ones can be overwhelming, especially if choices for personal care are limited. However, residents in Lewis County now have another option when the need arises for these types of services: Caring Hearts.
Caring Hearts opened its doors on June 29 of this year, and is a personal care home owned and operated by Bill and Mary Stump, Sr., located at 202 Brooklyn Avenue in Weston. Mary Stump has many years experience in this type of work, and wanted to start her own business in memory of Eliane Sayre. Stump has worked in the healthcare field since the age of 19, and helped care for Sayre prior to her passing earlier this year. The Stumps said their mission is to provide those who need assistance a positive, safe environment.
“We’re out to make clients happy,” Mary said.
Caring Hearts is able to take up to three clients who would have a bed in either a private room or a semi-private room, with no restrictions on age. The home has been inspected and approved by the WV DHHR Office of Facility Licensure and Certification Assisted Living Program. Because they do not staff a doctor and/or licensed nurse full time, they are classified as legally unlicensed. The Stumps clarified that they are licensed to provide 24 hour care on a permanent or temporary basis seven days a week, year round.
“We provide everything they need except their medications and underclothing,” Mary said.
Services do include assistance with bathing, dressing, walking, and feeding. Three meals per day, and two snacks, are provided for clients, which adhere to dietary guidelines provided by their physician.
“If a client requires supervision because of a physical or mental impairment or because of age, we provide that, too,” Mary added.
Activities and recreation is an important aspect to the home, and is provided each day in accordance with clients’ limitations.
Private insurance is accepted, if clients have as part of their policy coverage for unfskilled services.
The Stumps welcome volunteers interested in this type of field to come work alongside them and learn necessary skills. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and must pass two separate background checks, Mary said.
The Stumps strive to ensure Caring Hearts is as close to home as is possible for clients. They encourage family members to visit anytime, as they know the importance of having family close to loved ones who can no longer stay in their own homes, or that of relatives.
“They can even spend the night,” Mary said.
They are also pet friendly, and have a resident cat that visits with clients, as well. Mary said that even though they have a pet on the premises, it should not deter anyone in need of their services.
“We will keep her away from clients, if requested,” Mary said.
The Stumps have three daughters, three sons, and seven grandchildren with one on the way. They are both equally committed to caring for those who need assistance.
“We’re doing this as a team,” Mary said.
