A house in Springfield was struck by gunfire Wednesday afternoon.

Springfield Police Department spokesman Ryan Walsh told 22News officers were called to 172 Belmont Avenue at 2:30 p.m., following a ShotSpotter activation.

Walsh said the house was hit, but no one was home. No other victims were found.

Springfield Fire Department spokesperson Dennis Leger told 22News firefighters found an exterior wall insulation smoldering under the siding when they arrived. The fire caused under $5,000 in damages.

Leger said, “It appears the most likely cause of the fire was a “hot round” from a gunshot that struck the building.”

The Springfield Arson & Bomb Squad and police are investigating the suspicious incident.
