SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Fire crews assisted in putting out a small basement fire on Dawes Street in Springfield Tuesday evening. 

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News firefighters were called to the area of 47-49 Dawes St., where they found the small basement fire around 7:49 p.m. 

The fire was quickly put out and no injuries were reported. 

The small fire caused $5,000 in damage and the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad determined the cause to be improper disposal of smoking materials.
