SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A long-time Springfield politician won’t be running for re-election.

E. Henry Twiggs has served the city of Springfield for years before he became Ward 4 City Councilor serving five two-year terms.

Twiggs, who was a long time proponent of ward representation, has represented Ward 4 since 2009. Friday, he announced he will not seek re-election come November.

22News spoke with City Councilor Jesse Lederman, who said, Twiggs wants to see “young people” continue to get involved, to run for office, and to stand up for what they believe in.

“I mean this is a man who marched in Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King, came back to Springfield, worked as vice president of the CORE, Congress of Racial Equality, here in Springfield with many other people in the city, [and] truly a part of Springfield history,” said Lederman.

Lederman said Twiggs has been like a father and mentor, not only to him but to other young councilors. And called his departure “the end of an era on the City Council.”

Twiggs has also been a longtime Democratic Party leader in Springfield.
