SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Fire officials evacuated residents of a high-rise building on Chestnut Street in Springfield after reports of a kitchen fire Friday night. 

The residents have since been allowed to return to their homes.

According to Springfield Fire Department’s Arson and Bomb Squad Captain Brian Tetreault, crews were called to a seventh-floor apartment at 10 Chestnut Street for the kitchen fire around 8:27 p.m.  

Chestnut Towers is the only high-rise apartment building on that street. 

No injuries were reported, and the fire was quickly extinguished. 

The kitchen fire caused $5,000 in damage. Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be unattended cooking.
