SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Springfield is giving some residents the chance to become a lifeguard.
According to Springfield Spokesperson Marian Sullivan, beginning Tuesday night, the city’s Aquatics Department is offering a Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course throughout the week.
Those who wanted to participate in the course were given an in-pool test prior to the beginning of the course which included a 300-yard swim and a two-minute tread. Those interested needed to be at least 15-years-old and pre-registered for the course.
“I’ve found that for the past couple of years, you’ve got more and more 15-year-old kids,” said Joe Federico, Aquatics director. “Through the American Red Cross, you can take the course at age 15 I think a lot of kids are looking out for their futures and getting their certificates early.”
The training will take place daily from Tuesday until Friday at the Commerce High School.
Participants will learn important skills such as CPR, first aid, and water rescue skills.
