TRENTON, Mich. (WXYZ) — New details have emerged surrounding the human remains found in a fire pit at a Trenton home.

Trenton police say the person died from a gunshot wound to the head, and now suspect the case is a homicide.

They say they have an idea of who the victim may be, but it will take weeks before they can be identified.

The bones were found by the home's new owners earlier this month. The previous owner of the home, 57-year-old Mark Eberly, died during a police-involved shooting in Tennessee in late June.

Eberly lived in the house for decades with his parents and then for three years after they passed away. He was their only child and had a woman living with him.

Trenton Public Safety Director Steve Voss previously told 7 Action News the skull was fire-damaged, but intact, and they may be able to make an identity from dental records.
