DETROIT (WXYZ) — Police are investigating a deadly motorcycle accident on Detroit’s east side that involved a man being left by the person who was driving him.

Just before 2 a.m., a motorcycle crashed into a gray SUV on Gratiot near Harper Road. According to police, preliminary information shows that the motorcyclist collided with the SUV as it was trying to make a turn onto Peter Hunt Road.

Specifics of what led to the crash are not known, but police indicate that the man who was riding as a passenger was left behind and later died en route to the hospital. The driver of the motorcycle took off on foot and left the wrecked vehicle behind.

However, family of the victim, 26-year-old D'Ante Perkins, said they have doubts about what police say happened during the crash.

Perkins' father said they don't believe he could have been a passenger on the bike.

Fire crews and police shut down Gratiot Avenue between Peter Hunt and Harper while they investigated the crash overnight. The roads re-opened for traffic around 6 a.m.

Police say they do not have a description of the driver of the motorcycle at this time.
