The Cheyenne Hawks kick off the American Legion State A Tournament against the host in Powell. Cheyenne qualified for the state tournament on July 26, when they beat Wheatland, 7-6. Last season, the Hawks went 5-0 in the tournament and won the state championship in their first year under head coach, Brian Lopez. This season, they’re 16-24 heading into the tournament.

“I still feel pretty confident, I know what my team is able to do. There are a lot of fighters out there. I definitely believe were going to be there for a long time, hopefully taking home that hardware,” Lopez said.

Having reached the pinnacle of Wyoming youth baseball last year, the team is determined to repeat the outcome.

“They’re willing to put their bodies on the line,” Lopez said. “They’re listening well they’re coach-able kids. They’re just excited to go, they want to play tonight. It is what it is, we’ll play tomorrow against the host team and we’ll give them all we got.”

The first game is scheduled against Powell for Saturday, August 1 at 8:00pm in Powell, Wyoming.
