The Sheridan City Council approved a new ordinance that reaffirms the city administrator position. The ordinance arose out of the council's concerns about the division of responsibilities between the mayor and the city administrator.
City Councilman Jacob Martin said at Monday's city council meeting that the ordinance allows the mayor to focus on his vision for the city rather than working on daily operations.
"I value the mayor, and I know everyone else does. We just value your time spent on your other visions for the community," Martin said.
Sheridan Mayor Roger Miller voted against the ordinance. Miller has openly stated he believes the city administrator position takes away authority from the mayor.
"I have all of the qualifications, all of the education, all of the ability to do the job I was elected to do. And that's all I've asked. All I've asked is to do the job as the mayor that was elected by the people of the city of Sheridan," Miller said.
The new ordinance will go into effect in 60 days unless it is challenged by a petition. A petition would have to be signed by 10 percent of qualified voters, which would lead to a community vote.
