University Of Wyoming Fall Sports Cancelled

The Mountain West Conference, which includes the University of Wyoming, is cancelling all sporting events for the fall.

The decision was made by the league Board of Directors who were concerned about the growing numbers of COVID-19 in areas where some of the league's teams were located. A number of other leagues are expected to make similar announcements on Tuesday, August 11.

The MWC still has not made a decision on winter sports and will look at the option of playing football and other cancelled sports in the spring. Officials say they had been hopeful that with the right protocols they could still have a season, but growing numbers of COVID-19 cases forced the changes.

UW Athletics Director Tom Burman said, "We need to continue to focus on doing everything we can to help our student athletes maintain their health and to help them stay focused on their academics." Burman added that student athletes will be in for a period of adjustment.
