Every year as February 14 rolls around, we're encouraged to eat our body weight in conversation hearts and chocolate strawberries. But this year, a group of Georgia middle schoolers may have taken it a little too far, because two dozen kids were hospitalized Thursday after eating candy.

Twenty-eight Sandtown Middle School students in Atlanta reported symptoms of nausea and disorientation after devouring some celebratory candy. While officials are still unsure whether it was a case of overconsumption or a more serious issue, according to NBC News, the reaction was caused by the snacks.

"For the safety of all, students and staff were instructed not to eat anything given to them by another person and not to eat anything they didn't bring from their own home," Fulton County Schools chief academic officer Cliff Jones said in a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Spokesperson for the school district Susan Romanick told AJC that the police department and Georgia Bureau of Investigation would test food samples. Romanick said that until the bureau's investigation was complete, "the school system cannot make a determination of what caused students' illnesses, its origin, if there was a deliberate, wrongful act committed, or if criminal charges or student discipline will be levied."

School's principal Estella Cook sent out a letter to parents following the incident promising to find answers: "Please know that we want answers as much as you do, and will cooperate with all agencies to find out what happened."
